Market Close Recap: Records, Sentiment Shock, and a Retail Earnings Gauntlet Ahead
Stocks closed out a third consecutive winning week even though Friday's session cracked lower as the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment gauge sank to its worst level since May and the 10-year yield pushed toward a 19-month high. With markets shut for the weekend, the next real catalyst is a five-day retail earnings gauntlet running from Home Depot through Walmart that will either confirm or contradict the weak consumer signal, plus Wednesday's FOMC minutes for clues on how seriously the Fed is weighing a hike rather than a cut.

Five Things That Mattered This Week
- Third straight weekly gain, but Friday cracked. The S&P notched its third consecutive weekly advance even after slipping 0.19% Friday from Thursday's record close above 7,800.
- Consumer sentiment just cratered. The preliminary August University of Michigan index tumbled to 51.0 from 55.2, missing the 55.0 estimate, while year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.3%.
- Long yields near cycle highs. The 10-year Treasury yield pushed to 4.70% Friday after Fed Chair Warsh signaled a rate hike may not be his preferred tool even as inflation expectations climb.
- Reddit joins the S&P 500 Tuesday. RDDT shares jumped more than 10% after S&P Dow Jones Indices confirmed Reddit will be added to the benchmark before the open on August 18.
- A five-day retail earnings gauntlet is next. Home Depot and Baidu report Tuesday, Target/Lowe's/TJX/Analog Devices Wednesday, and Walmart/Deere Thursday.
Notable Options Flow
Options desks leaned bullish on AI infrastructure and semiconductor names into next week, with large LEAPS call buying in Nvidia (both the $220 and $265 January 2027 strikes) and CoreWeave, plus a descending-fill sweep in Micron's $1,100 September calls ahead of its September 22 earnings. On the hedging side, a large opening floor trade bought TLT $82 puts expiring July 2027 — a bet that long rates stay elevated. Nebius also saw repeated bullish hits in its August calls.
What to Watch Next Week
The macro calendar is light on the surface but the retail earnings slate is the real event: Home Depot and Baidu report Tuesday before the bell, followed by Target, Lowe's, TJX Companies, Analog Devices and Estée Lauder on Wednesday, and Walmart and Deere on Thursday. Options markets imply moves ranging from roughly 3.5% (Home Depot, TJX) up to nearly 6% (Target, Ross Stores) and into the low double digits for smaller names like Wolfspeed and Bill Holdings. Wednesday's FOMC minutes from the July 28-29 meeting should also clarify how the committee is weighing a possible hike against elevated long-end yields. Reddit's formal addition to the S&P 500 before Tuesday's open adds a passive-flow wildcard on top of it all.
