Market Briefing: Iran Sanctions, Sky-High Yields, and Nvidia Week Ahead — August 24, 2026

Futures are pointing modestly lower to start the week after all four major indexes posted back-to-back weekly losses, with a Treasury press conference on new Iran sanctions and a stacked pre-Jackson Hole earnings calendar the two things most likely to move the tape today. The 10-year yield's stubborn grip near 20-month highs remains the macro backdrop every other headline gets read through. Options positioning shows dealers bunched in a tight band around current SPY and QQQ levels, arguing for a choppier, more headline-reactive session than a clean trend day.

Market setup

  • S&P 500 futures: -0.2%
  • Nasdaq 100 futures: -0.5%
  • Dow futures: -0.1%
  • Russell 2000 futures: -0.2%
  • 10-year Treasury yield: ~4.71%
  • WTI crude: $85.23 (-2.1%)
  • Bitcoin: $77,726 (+0.6%)
  • Gold: $4,698.60 (+0.4%)

Dealer gamma: key levels to watch

SPY (spot ~766): call wall 770, then 780; put wall 760, then 750. QQQ (spot ~713): call wall 715, then 720; put wall 700, then 710. Call walls mark strikes where dealer hedging flows may slow rallies, and put walls mark strikes where dealer hedging may cushion pullbacks — these are options-derived positioning estimates, not price targets or guarantees.

Five things that matter today

  1. Iran "Economic D-Day" sanctions land today. Treasury Secretary Bessent holds a press conference this afternoon detailing sweeping new sanctions on Iran's oil trade and the banks financing it. Trading impact: expect headline-driven whips in crude and China-exposed names.
  2. The 10-year yield won't come down. Treasurys sit near 4.71%-4.74%, just off last week's 20-month high. Trading impact: rate-sensitive sectors stay under pressure until yields roll over.
  3. Jackson Hole is four trading days away. The Kansas City Fed's symposium runs August 27-29, marking new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's first appearance in the role. Trading impact: expect rising options premium into Friday's keynote.
  4. The biggest earnings week of the summer starts now. PDD Holdings and XPeng report before today's open, Zoom and Intuit follow Tuesday, and Nvidia headlines Wednesday alongside Salesforce, CrowdStrike, Veeva and Okta. Trading impact: elevated implied moves across the AI/software complex.
  5. Hard assets are bid while equity futures stay soft. Bitcoin holds above $77,000 after its best week in two years and gold pushes toward record highs. Trading impact: reads more like hedging demand than risk-on conviction.

Notable options flow

  • QQQ $700P 8/28 — repeated ascending-fill sweeps, dealer put hedging — $795K ask-side
  • SPY $743P 9/18 — cluster of repeated put hits, portfolio hedges — $769K ask-side
  • SPX $8600C 10/30 — 5,000-lot single block trade — $1.38M premium
  • IWM $285P 9/18 — ascending-fill sweep, small-cap hedge — $433K ask-side
  • UBER $80P Jan'28 — LEAP put, bearish long-term bet — $382K ask-side
  • QQQ $716C 8/25 — sweep, near-term bullish tilt — $466K ask-side

What to Watch

Watch the 1:00 PM ET Treasury press conference for the scope of Iran sanctions and any read-through to oil and Chinese refiners. Watch the 10-year yield for any break below 4.65% that would ease pressure on utilities and REITs. Watch PDD Holdings and XPeng premarket for the first data points on Chinese consumer and EV demand this earnings season, and watch implied volatility build into Wednesday's Nvidia, Salesforce and CrowdStrike reports. Materials (XLB) led sector performance Friday while Utilities (XLU) lagged — a rotation worth tracking as yields stay elevated.

Sign-off

That's the setup heading into the bell. Markets are entering a stretch where macro (Iran, yields, Jackson Hole) and micro (Nvidia-led earnings) collide — stay nimble and size positions for gaps.
