Market Briefing, August 26, 2026: Stocks Dip as Nvidia and PCE Loom

Futures are drifting on either side of flat overnight as traders keep their powder dry ahead of two back-to-back catalysts: the Fed's preferred inflation gauge at 8:30am ET and Nvidia's earnings after tonight's close. Tech is the epicenter of both the caution and the overnight damage, with Intuit and Zoom sliding on soft forward guidance even as chip stocks broadly firmed into Nvidia's print.

Market setup

  • S&P 500 futures: -0.1%
  • Nasdaq 100 futures: -0.2%
  • Dow futures: roughly flat
  • Russell 2000 futures: 3,011.30 (-0.10%)
  • 10-year Treasury yield: ~4.63%, after Tuesday's slide to 4.625%
  • WTI crude: $80.36 (-2.43%), a third straight down day
  • Bitcoin: $78,723 (-0.50%)
  • Gold: $4,678.40 (-0.34%), still near a three-month high

Where the indexes closed Tuesday

Dow Jones Industrial Average53,577.40 (+0.30%)
Russell 20003,010.02 (+0.50%)

Key levels: dealer gamma

SPY spot (~$766) is sitting just under its 767 call wall with a gamma flip near 760.7, while QQQ (~$711) is sandwiched almost exactly between its 711 call wall and 709 put wall. Call walls mark strikes where dealer hedging may slow rallies; put walls mark strikes where hedging may cushion dips. These are positioning estimates, not guarantees.

Five things that matter today

  1. Nvidia's the whole ballgame tonight. Options imply roughly a 5% move on the stock, which sits basically flat pre-market after Monday's near-3% slide on AI-capex jitters.
  2. A loaded 8:30am data dump. Core PCE, the second GDP estimate, durable goods orders and personal income/spending all print before the open, with GDP consensus near 1.5% (down from 2.1%) and core PCE holding near 3.3% y/y.
  3. Software guidance is getting punished. Intuit sank roughly 10% pre-market on weak FY27 guidance, and Zoom fell about 5.8% on a soft Q3 EPS guide despite a solid quarter.
  4. Dealer gamma has SPY and QQQ pinned into a tight range ahead of the data and the print.
  5. Cross-asset tone is oddly calm — falling yields, falling oil, rising gold — but none of it is translating into pre-market equity strength.

Notable options flow

IWM $285P 9/18~$760K ask-side, repeated-hit put buying on small caps
SPY $728P 9/18~$860K ask-side protective put buying
NVDA $215C 8/28~$137K ask-side call buying ahead of earnings
SPXW $7675C 8/26~$138K ask-side same-day expiry call sweep
QQQ $718C 8/28~$118K ask-side bullish call buying just above spot
XLE $62C 8/28~$98K ask-side energy call buying despite crude's slide

What to Watch

The order of operations today matters: Core PCE and GDP hit before the open, and how bonds react will set the tone heading into the close. Then all eyes turn to Nvidia, CrowdStrike and Salesforce after the bell, with Nvidia's data-center commentary likely to set the tape for semiconductor and AI-infrastructure names into month-end. Watch whether SPY can clear its 767 call wall or QQQ breaks below its 709 put wall — either would signal dealer hedging flows are starting to amplify rather than dampen the move.

Sign-off

That's the setup for Wednesday, August 26. Data first, Nvidia last — buckle up.
