Market Briefing, Oct 1 2026: Micron Beats Big, Stock Shrugs as Yields Hit a 2002 High

Market Briefing — Thursday, October 1, 2026

Stocks limped into the fourth quarter after a wild final session of Q3: softer core PCE inflation briefly fueled a rally before Treasury yields spiked to their highest since 2002, erasing the gains into the close. Futures are modestly higher this morning, but today hinges on the ISM Manufacturing PMI, a parade of five Fed speakers, and three earnings reports — Accenture, McCormick and Nike — that will test whether this narrow, AI-led rally can broaden out.

Five things that matter today

  1. Tech is carrying the tape alone. XLK was the only S&P sector ETF to close green Wednesday (+0.64%) while the other ten sectors fell, and roughly three-quarters of S&P 500 members finished September lower even as the index itself eked out a gain.
  2. The 10-year is pinned near a 2002 high. The 10-year Treasury yield closed Wednesday at 5.29% even after core PCE inflation came in cooler than expected, keeping pressure on rate-sensitive groups like small caps, utilities and REITs.
  3. Micron smashed estimates and shares shrugged. Fiscal Q4 revenue of $54.23B beat the $51.07B estimate, EPS of $33.42 beat $31.61, and Q1 guidance of roughly $61.5B came in well above the Street — yet MU dipped about 0.6% in Thursday's premarket, suggesting the memory/AI trade may already be priced for perfection.
  4. Five Fed speakers hit the tape today. Waller, Jefferson, Bowman, Cook and Dallas Fed's Logan all speak hours after the ISM Manufacturing PMI print, keeping the rate path front and center.
  5. Options flow flipped defensive into the close. Market-wide net call premium peaked near +$144M around midday but reversed to net-negative by the final bell as hedging picked up.

Key dealer-gamma levels

SPY (spot ~763)Call wall 763 (then 769) · Put wall 762 (then 755)
QQQ (spot ~740)Call wall 741 (then 745) · Put wall 736 (then 734)

Call walls mark strikes where dealer positioning may slow a rally; put walls mark strikes where hedging flows may cushion a dip. These are positioning estimates from options flow, not guarantees.

Notable earnings

Already reported: Hub Group (HUBG) beat, EPS $0.45 vs. $0.38 est.

Still ahead before the open: Accenture (±6.1% implied move), McCormick (±6.0%), Acuity Brands (±7.4%).

After the close: Nike, with options pricing a ±7.3% move.

Notable options flow

The most aggressive ask-side bets Wednesday included a $6.8M AMD January-2028 $610 call sweep, a $5.2M CrowdStrike January-2028 $240 call sweep as part of a broader LEAPS call cluster, and a $5.4M opening floor trade in Praxis Precision Medicines' $290 calls on unusually low historic volume. Semiconductor ETF SOXX also saw a $3.5M bullish LEAPS floor trade, while Meta and Micron saw shorter-dated call buying tied to upcoming catalysts.

Congress corner

Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK) exchanged $500K–$1M of ONEOK and trimmed positions across Home Depot, Emerson Electric, Cadence Design, Devon Energy, NextEra Energy and Rockwell Automation. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) sold Alphabet and AbbVie shares. Sen. Richard Blumenthal's spouse bought into a New York hedge fund. These are delayed disclosures, not real-time trades.

What to Watch

Watch the SPY 762 put wall and 763 call wall for intraday pivot points — a break below 762 could invite further downside given the week's hedging flows. On the macro side, any hawkish surprise from today's five Fed speakers, layered on top of a 5.29% 10-year yield, could reignite the valuation pressure that hit the Dow and Russell hardest in September. And keep an eye on whether Nike's after-the-close print can do what Micron's couldn't: actually move the stock in line with the size of the beat.

That's today's setup. Markets open at 9:30am ET — trade safe out there.
