Markets Today, October 5, 2026: Soft Jobs Data, ISM Services PMI, and SPY's Gamma Ceiling
Friday's cooler September jobs report — just 29,000 payrolls added and unemployment up to 4.2% — pulled rate-hike odds back down and sent the Nasdaq to a fresh record close, even as the 10-year yield held stubbornly above 5.25%. Monday's action hinges almost entirely on the 10:00 AM ET ISM Services PMI, the week's first hard read on whether that labor cooling is spreading beyond the household survey, with futures drifting slightly lower into the print. Oil's slide back toward $90 a barrel is giving the inflation side of the ledger some room to breathe heading into the data.

Key Levels: Dealer Gamma on SPY and QQQ
SPY (spot ~770): call wall 771 (then 775), put wall 768 (then 765). QQQ (spot ~750): call wall 752 (then 754), put wall 740 (then 746). Call walls mark strikes where dealer hedging tends to slow rallies, and put walls mark strikes where hedging can cushion dips — these are positioning estimates, not guarantees.
Today's Economic Calendar (ET)
9:45 AM — S&P Global US Services PMI (final), prior 56.5. 10:00 AM — ISM Services PMI (September), consensus 55.0 versus 55.4 prior. The prices-paid and employment components matter more than the headline for the rate-cut debate.
Key Themes
- A soft jobs report reshaped the Fed outlook. September payrolls rose just 29,000 and unemployment climbed to 4.2%, cooling bets on another rate hike after September's move to 3.75%-4.00%.
- Nasdaq closed at a record on tech and semis. Friday's 1.19% gain to 27,190.86 was a fresh closing high, led by mega-cap tech and semiconductor strength.
- ISM Services PMI lands at 10:00 AM ET. Consensus sits at 55.0 versus 55.4 in August, with prices-paid and employment the real swing factors.
- Crude has slid back toward $90. WTI is down from over $100 a barrel two weeks ago as supply-release reports eased concern over a prolonged squeeze.
- Dealer gamma is pinning SPY in a tight band. A 771 call wall against a 768 put wall, with QQQ boxed between 752 and 740, points to range-bound chop into the ISM print.
Notable Options Flow
| SPCX $155 call, 10/16 expiry | $1.1M ask-side sweep |
| QQQ $716 put, 10/30 expiry | $1.1M ask-side, ascending fills |
| IWM $267 put, 12/18 expiry | $1.27M premium, index hedge |

| AMD $660 call, 10/30 expiry | $615K ask-side, AI-capex theme |
| AMZN $250 call, 10/16 expiry | $328K ask-side, pre-earnings bullish bet |
Earnings On Deck
Nothing major reports today. Small-caps Aehr Test Systems, Grifols, NanoViricides and CBAK Energy Technology are on the calendar with unconfirmed timing. The week's real catalysts land later: Constellation Brands Tuesday after the close (options-implied move ±4.5%), PepsiCo Thursday before the open (±3.2%), and Delta Air Lines Friday before the open (±5.4%).
Congress Corner
- Rep. David J. Taylor (R) bought Home Depot (HD) and Amgen (AMGN), $1,001–$15,000 each, September 22, 2026

These are STOCK Act disclosures, often filed weeks after the actual trade date — not real-time signals.
What To Watch
The ISM Services print at 10:00 AM ET is the single biggest swing factor today: a reading near or below the 55.0 consensus keeps the soft-landing narrative intact and should support the tech-led rally, while a hot prices-paid component could reignite rate-hike fears and pressure duration-sensitive growth names. Watch the SPY 768-771 band and QQQ's 740-752 range for early signs of which way dealer positioning tips. Retail attention remains fixed on chips and mega-cap tech — Micron, Nike, Meta, AMD and Alphabet drew the heaviest social mentions this past week — alongside continued speculative interest in newly public SpaceX (SPCX).
Sign-Off
That's the setup heading into the bell. Markets stay data-dependent from here, with ISM services this morning and Constellation Brands, PepsiCo and Delta earnings stacking up later this week.
