Market Briefing: October 14, 2026

Futures are drifting modestly higher into the open, but nothing matters more today than the 8:30am ET September CPI print — markets have been hanging on it since Monday. NY Fed President Williams' Tuesday remark that another hike "may not be necessary" in 2027 pulled stocks off session lows, yet a five-day chipmaker selloff and mixed bank earnings kept the tape choppy. Six companies report before the bell, so expect financials and chips to do the heavy lifting today.

Key themes today

  1. CPI is the whole ballgame. September CPI lands at 8:30am ET with consensus near +3.6% Y/Y headline versus 3.4% prior; core CPI prior was 2.4% Y/Y. Expect index futures to tread water until the print, then a sharp directional move on any surprise.
  2. Options flow turned defensive into the close. Market-wide net call premium peaked near +$74M around 10am before net put premium swelled past +$180M by mid-afternoon, even though the full session still finished call-heavy overall ($21.2B calls vs $14.8B puts).
  3. Bank earnings season is in full swing. Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, BlackRock, Progressive, State Street and Fastenal all print before the bell, with options implying moves from roughly 2.9% to 5.0%.
  4. The chip selloff isn't over. Memory names have been pressured for five straight sessions after China's CXMT advanced a more powerful chip architecture, even as ASML raised its FY26 floor while warning 2027-28 lithography supply can't fully meet AI demand.
  5. Dealer gamma is pinned right at spot. SPY's call wall and put wall sit almost on top of each other just above Tuesday's close, with QQQ similarly boxed in — expect a tight range unless CPI breaks it open.

NVDA $220C 12/17/27 — long-dated bullish call buying$1.9M ask-side

What to Watch

The September CPI print at 8:30am ET is the single biggest catalyst of the day — a hot core number would revive hike bets that Fed officials tried to tamp down this week, while a cool number could unleash the rally that's been stuck below record highs. Keep an eye on the bank earnings slate (BAC, MS, BLK, PGR, STT, FAST) for an early read on consumer and corporate credit health, and watch whether ASML's results can finally stabilize the five-day slide in semiconductor stocks. With SPY's dealer gamma call and put walls essentially stacked on top of each other at 778-779, don't be surprised if price action stays contained until the data forces a break.

That's the setup heading into the bell. Trade safe out there.
