SPY 30 minute chart, last three sessions, closing at 773.13

Wednesday's tech-led gains (XLK +1.67%) are unwinding before the bell. A slate of technology earnings fell short of elevated expectations and escalating hostilities in the Middle East pushed oil prices higher. Tesla cut its spending guidance to about $20 billion and Lam Research guided weak after the close , which outweighed Meta's beat. Meanwhile, Brent crossed $110 after a drone strike on a Saudi oil field. The session hinges on whether the 8:30 AM jobless claims and the heavy pre-market earnings slate can steady sentiment while the 10-year yield sits above 5.1%.

SPY's one-month map showed Put Wall 760 (−1.2%), where most of the negative gamma sits, with 750 and 745 behind it . QQQ is trading below its gamma flip levels, where moves can accelerate, and if a wall gives way, hedging adds to the break.

Social-media trends

Retail chatter is focused on SPY, QQQ, CoreWeave, Micron, SpaceX (SPCX), Tesla and Meta. In the last day, mentions of SpaceX have surged by an impressive 67% , and options flow shows net call premium of $27.0M in SPCX. In Tesla, bears focus on valuation, heavy AI and robotics investment, and delayed Optimus milestones, while bulls emphasize cash generation . In Meta, traders are split between strong ad numbers and worries about negative free cash flow, heavy investment, and the new non-voting share structure . META ($37.5M) and TSLA ($37.1M) led net call premium. Flow was net negative in MU (-$26.7M) and GOOGL (-$26.2M). On the index side, QQQ traders are debating whether heavy AI spending will deliver returns and framed the move as a sell-the-news reaction.

What matters today

  1. Meta and Tesla Split on AI Spending. Meta reported earnings of $3.83 per share, above Wall Street's estimate of $3.57, and revenue of $64.6 billion, above the $63.34 billion forecast . It also now guides 2026 capex to a range of $135 billion to $145 billion, up from a prior lower-end figure of $130 billion . Tesla went the other way. It cut the full-year capital expenditure forecast to approximately $20 billion from a previous guidance of more than $25 billion , and the stock was sliding 5.0% in pre-open trading today to reach $367.20 . META ($37.5M net) and TSLA ($37.1M net) led yesterday's call-side options flow. Trading impact: expect wide opening gaps in both names, so check your copy trading position sizes before the bell.
  2. Chip Stocks Fall Despite Lam's Beat. Lam posted adjusted earnings of $2.20 a share on revenue of $8.22 billion, compared with analyst forecasts of $2.18 a share and $8.13 billion . Even so, the stock fell 7.38% to $241.57 in after-hours trading , with investors pointing to the narrow beat, guidance close to consensus with a wide range, supply limits and an expected sharp drop in China's share of revenue . Tech led yesterday's sectors (XLK +1.67%), but options flow already leaned bearish on chips: MU at -$26.7M net, SOXX at -$8.8M and INTC at -$8.1M, against SNDK at +$15.4M. Trading impact: yesterday's semiconductor gains are the most likely to reverse at the open.
  3. Oil Tops $110 After Saudi Attacks. Brent crude increased by 2.4 percent to USD 111.40 per barrel as of 6 a.m. GMT, while WTI rose 2.22 percent to USD 99.30 per barrel . The move followed a Houthi drone strike near Saudi Aramco's Shaybah field, which produces about one million barrels of crude a day , although the Saudi Energy Ministry said operations were unaffected . Asia sold off overnight, with the Kospi down 3.8% and the Hang Seng down 3.0% . Trading impact: energy stocks and oil headlines could move against the tech sell-off all session.
  4. Light Data Day Before the Fed. Weekly jobless claims come out at 8:30 AM ET (prior 199,000), followed by Leading Indicators at 10:00 (prior -0.1%) and the Kansas City Fed survey at 11:00 (prior 20). The Fed remains in its blackout period ahead of next week's October 27–28 FOMC meeting , and Treasury holds a $26bn 5-year TIPS auction . The flash PMIs (priors 57 and 58.7) and the final University of Michigan survey (prior 48.1) follow on Friday. Trading impact: a surprise in claims is the only scheduled data likely to move stocks before the open.
  5. Heavy Earnings Day and Fund Selling. 27 S&P 500 companies report today, including Procter & Gamble, Union Pacific, Western Digital, Blackstone, Valero Energy, Lockheed Martin, Newmont and Comcast . BofA says clients sold US equities last week (-$9.1B), led by institutions in their 10th-biggest selling week in BofA's data since 2008 , as mutual funds sell losing positions for taxes before their October 31 fiscal year-ends. Yesterday's options flow showed $140.5M of net call premium against -$53.3M of net put premium. Alphabet was the exception, with GOOGL at -$26.2M and GOOG at -$18.0M. Dealer gamma positioning data is unavailable today. Trading impact: results from individual companies are likely to drive moves more than the broad market.
