Copy Trading vs Signal Groups: Why Text Alerts Are Not Copy Trading

~5 min readAlertsify Team

TL;DR: A signal group sends text. You are still the execution layer. Copy trading starts when a lead’s broker reports a fill, your size and 14 rules run, and your broker can place your order. Alertsify is the second thing. A chat with a cropped P&L is not.

The definition lives on options copy trading. The path lives on how it works.

Signal rooms sell a ticker and a picture of a winner. Copy trading sells a fill that already happened in a connected brokerage account.

Those are different products. Mixing the words is how people buy a chat and think they bought execution.

What a signal group actually is

Someone types a ticker, a strike, and a “BTO.” Sometimes they paste a P&L screenshot. Sometimes the loser disappears by morning. You open the chain. You retype the expiry. You eat the spread while your thumbs catch up.

The public record is whatever they chose to post. There is no blotter behind the crop.

That can still be an idea feed if you treat it as one. It is not copy trading.

What copy trading actually is

Copy trading means one account’s fills are reproduced in another account. With options that is four fields plus size: underlying, strike, expiry, and call or put.

On Alertsify:

  1. The lead’s broker records a fill.
  2. Alertsify applies your proportional size and the 14 controls.
  3. If a rule fails, or the quote has moved past your slippage guard, the copy is skipped. You see the skip.
  4. If it passes, your broker gets the order.

Platform-side: under 200 milliseconds on the homepage claim, under a second to the broker. Your fill is still your broker’s fill. A wide bid-ask or a slow queue dominates any of those milliseconds.

You surrender trade selection for the traders you chose to follow. You do not surrender custody.

Why a text alert is not a copy

A “copy this” sticker on a PNG does not place an order. An approve/deny tap on Lite, or an auto-fire on Pro, does — inside the account you already have.

Robinhood and Charles Schwab are both full-trade brokers on that list. Details: copy trading on Robinhood · supported brokers.

The tape, not the crop

Every public number on an Alertsify profile is calculated from that trader’s connected brokerage fills: entries, exits, size, P&L. Losses stay. There is no delete-this-trade button.

My P&L replays those closed fills at your size and your rules. It can come out negative. That is what you would have held, not a promise. Find your fit ranks the board the same way.

Alertsify does not recommend anyone. The trust label is how long they have been live and verified, not a star rating.

Size and the 14 controls

Copies are proportional. You set a size. You do not inherit the lead’s contract count. A 40-lot print on the leaderboard is not a 40-lot order in a 1-lot account. You can size bigger than the lead. If a proportional copy would go over your plan cap, Alertsify sizes it down to the cap. It skips only when a single contract itself is over the cap.

The 14 controls live in one panel: max daily profit and loss, freeze, max risk per trade, max open exposure, custom 0DTE sizing, correlation limit, min OI, min vol, spread width, custom DTE, block 0DTE, auto-cancel unfilled, close-after timer. Per trader you can also disable stocks, calls, or puts.

Two bills, three modes

PlanWhat happens
Free · $0Look. No execute.
Lite · $99/moYou trade yourself. Following is optional: every alert is approve or deny.
Pro · $249/mo or $1,997/yr (~$166/mo)Copies can fire when the lead’s fill hits. Optional tap-to-confirm per trader.

Most Lite users never follow anyone. They use Alertsify as the book.

Software is one bill. Traders bill separately. Most charge. Some are free. You see that price before you follow. If you lead, first 10 subscribers are free for 90 days.

You connect through the broker portal (OAuth). Alertsify never sees that password, never holds funds, and never gets withdrawal access. Ten full-trade brokers, including Robinhood and Schwab. Confirm on the connect screen.

If you only remember one thing

A room that texts you a winner is a newsletter with a ticker. A fill that already hit another connected broker, filtered by your rules, sent to your broker — that is copy trading.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Discord signal group the same as copy trading?
No. A Discord room sends text. You are the execution layer, and the track record is whatever they posted. Alertsify sends an order to your broker from a fill that already happened in another connected account. The public stats come from that tape.
Can I still approve every trade?
Yes. On Lite, a follow is always approve or deny. On Pro, you can auto-execute or require a tap per trader.
Does Alertsify hold my money?
No. There is no Alertsify wallet. Funds stay at the broker you connected. Revoke from either side.
How fast is a copy versus me retyping a chat?
Platform-side under 200ms, under a second to the broker. The fill is still the broker's. The difference is you stopped being the keyboard.
Where do the public numbers come from?
Connected brokerage fills. Losses stay. There is no delete-this-trade button. That is what broker-verified means.
