Market Briefing, September 17, 2026: Fed Hikes, Stocks Steady
The Fed delivered its first rate hike since 2023 on Wednesday, lifting the target range to 3.75%-4.00% and signaling more tightening ahead, which knocked the Dow to its worst day since February before futures stabilized overnight. Options flow told the story of the reversal — net call premium ran as high as +$170M mid-morning before flipping to roughly -$78M by the 4pm close as traders repositioned around Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish press conference. Today hinges on jobless claims, the Philly Fed survey, and housing data, with Friday's quadruple witching adding gamma risk into the weekend.

Key Levels (Dealer Gamma)
SPY (spot ~754): call wall 755, then 758; put wall 754, then 753. QQQ (spot ~705): call wall 708, then 709; put wall 705, then 702. Call walls mark strikes where dealer positioning may slow a rally; put walls mark where hedging flows may cushion a dip. These are positioning estimates, not guarantees.
Five Things That Matter Today
- Fed hikes for the first time since 2023. The FOMC voted unanimously to raise the fed funds target 25bp to 3.75%-4.00%, and 16 of 18 policymakers pencil in at least one more hike this year.
- Stocks whipsawed, then futures steadied. The Dow shed 631 points (-1.21%) on its worst day since February while the Nasdaq barely budged (-0.01%).
- 10-year yield topped 5% before easing. Long bonds sold off hard on the hike before paring roughly 2bp Thursday morning as Warsh's inflation-fighting tone reassured credit markets.
- Oil still above $100 on Mideast risk. WTI eased toward $100/bbl as Saudi Arabia works to restore pipeline capacity, but prices remain elevated on Strait of Hormuz concerns.
- Lennar misses and cuts guidance. The homebuilder posted adjusted EPS of $1.23 versus $1.30 expected and trimmed FY26 delivery guidance to 80,000-81,000 homes.
Notable Options Flow
| SPX $7000C 12/18 | $437.6M repeat hits |
| SPXW $8190C 12/31 | $368.0M repeat hits |
| SPCX $205P 9/18 | $92.6M ask-side |
| NVDA $195C 9/18 | $74.8M ask-side |
| MSTR $40C 9/18 | $54.2M bid-side |
| CDNS $370P 9/18 | $40.5M split flow |
Notable Earnings
Already reported: Lennar (LEN) missed after Wednesday's close — adjusted EPS $1.23 vs. $1.30 expected on revenue of $8.05B vs. $8.31B expected — and cut its full-year delivery guidance. Shares traded around $77.58 premarket, roughly 1% below Wednesday's pre-earnings close.
Still ahead before the open: a quiet slate with no S&P 500 names — smaller reporters include Endava (DAVA) and VinFast (VFS).
After the close: Hub Group (HUBG) reports tonight with options pricing an implied move of roughly ±6.2%.
Congress Corner
- Rep. Gilbert Cisneros (D) bought Eaton (ETN) and Quanta Services (PWR), $15,001-$50,000 each, transacted 8/27/2026.
- Rep. Gilbert Cisneros (D) sold DoorDash (DASH), $1,001-$15,000, transacted 8/28/2026.
- Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. (R) sold Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), transacted 8/27/2026.
- Rep. David Taylor (R) bought Broadcom (AVGO) twice, $1,001-$15,000 each, transacted 8/26/2026.
- Sen. John Boozman (R) bought Otis Worldwide (OTIS) and sold iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), transacted 8/27/2026.
These are delayed congressional disclosures, not real-time trades.
What to Watch
Friday brings quadruple witching, which can amplify gamma-driven moves into the close as dealer hedging unwinds around the SPY 754-755 zone. Keep an eye on Hub Group's after-hours print tonight, any read-through from Lennar's guidance cut into the broader homebuilder complex, and whether the 10-year yield's pullback from 5% continues to take pressure off rate-sensitive sectors. Retail attention remains fixed on SpaceX (SPCX) options activity, MicroStrategy (MSTR) as a bitcoin proxy, and continued call buying in NVDA.
That's the setup — good luck out there.
