Market Briefing, September 18, 2026: Stocks Extend Gains Past the Fed's First Hike in Three Years
~4 min readAlertsify Team
Market Briefing — Friday, September 18, 2026
Futures point to a fourth straight session of gains after Thursday's sharp post-Fed relief rally, with falling oil prices and a pullback in Treasury yields doing more to calm markets than anything the Fed itself said this week. Today's session hinges on a light data slate — industrial production, capacity utilization and leading indicators — and whether crude's third straight down day can keep extending the bid into the weekend.
Where the major averages stand
| Index | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,636.21 | +1.12% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,395.18 | +1.60% |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 51,804.13 | +0.67% |
| Russell 2000 | 2,882.71 | +0.84% |
What matters today
- Fed hikes, market shrugs it off. The FOMC raised the fed funds rate 25bp to 3.75%-4% Wednesday — its first hike in three years — and signaled another increase this year; stocks sold off that day then ripped higher Thursday as yields and oil fell. Fade the knee-jerk hawkish reaction as long as oil and yields keep easing.
- Oil's three-day slide is doing the Fed's job. WTI fell to $101.21 (-0.69%) Friday, a third straight down session, as Saudi Arabia reroutes crude through Oman around Houthi pipeline strikes. Falling energy costs buy the Fed room to pause.
- 10-year yield backs off the 5% ceiling. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to roughly 4.93% from a multi-year high near 5.01%. Lower discount rates support long-duration tech; a renewed push toward 5% is the biggest risk to this bounce.
- Chips lead on a memory-pricing tailwind. Micron jumped over 5% Thursday after Intel's CEO said memory demand and pricing keep strengthening, and the semiconductor index gained roughly 3%.
- Lucid pops 11% on a robotaxi deal. Lucid signed a partnership with ride-hailing platform Bolt to deploy at least 25,000 autonomous vehicles in Europe.

What retail is watching
Reddit chatter is concentrated in AI/chip names — NVIDIA, Alphabet and Micron — while Nebius and SpaceX are seeing sharp mention spikes, and General Motors jumped to the top of WallStreetBets' boards overnight.
What to Watch
The path of oil and the 10-year yield remain the swing factors for this rally: a fourth day of falling crude would reinforce the disinflation narrative, while a bounce back toward 5% on the 10-year would quickly test dealer support levels near SPY 762 and QQQ 716. Micron's next earnings print (September 30) is also on the radar after this week's bullish memory-pricing commentary.
