Fed Hikes, Nasdaq Shrugs: Weekly Market Wrap for Sept 20, 2026

Markets head into the new week digesting a historic Fed decision, a bond market that keeps flirting with 5%, and an oil price still working through Middle East supply fears. Monday's economic calendar is empty, so expect thin, positioning-driven trade until Wednesday's flash PMIs. The real test is whether the Nasdaq's stealth resilience can keep absorbing tighter policy without small-cap and cyclical weakness spreading further.

What Matters Most

  1. First Fed hike in three years. The FOMC raised rates 25bp to 3.75%-4.00% and Chair Warsh flagged more tightening ahead; markets now price roughly 90% odds of another hike by Dec 9.
  2. 10-year flirted with 5%. The benchmark yield topped 5.04% intraweek before easing to about 4.94% as oil retreated.
  3. Nasdaq vs. everything else. The Nasdaq gained for the week while the Dow lost 1.7% and small caps, transports and industrials extended multi-week losing streaks.
  4. Oil stays the wildcard. WTI eased to $100.30 Friday but remains up roughly 19% over the month on Strait of Hormuz supply fears.
  5. Tightening has gone global. The Bank of Japan hiked to a 31-year high Friday even as the VIX eased to 14.81.

What to Watch This Week

Wednesday's flash Services and Manufacturing PMIs are the first real data test since the Fed's hike, followed by Thursday's jobless claims, new home sales and a speech from Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin. Friday brings durable goods orders and the final University of Michigan consumer sentiment read. On earnings, watch AutoZone and KB Home Tuesday, General Mills, Paychex and Cintas Wednesday, and Costco's Thursday print — its options market is pricing roughly a 3% move either way.

Sign-off

It was a week where the headline index levels barely moved but the internals told a much sharper story: mega-cap tech absorbing a rate hike while cyclicals and small caps kept sliding. That divergence, not the Fed itself, may be the more important story heading into fourth-quarter positioning.
